    The NLRB issued a notice of proposed rulemaking that would overhaul the procedures surrounding a secret ballot election in a union organizing campaign, potentially reducing the amount of time between when a petition is filed and the election takes place from approximately 40 days to as few as 10 days. More

    The construction industry added 2,000 jobs nationwide in May, according to the Associated Builders and Contractors. Those additions brought the national unemployment rate to 16.3 percent, a better showing than 17.8 percent last month and 20.1 percent recorded at the same time last year. Despite that growth, ABC's Chief Economist Anirban Basu has stated that the increase was a "bitter disappointment" but that more privately funded projects will rebound as public projects come to a close.     Republicans in Louisiana are leading the charge against government mandates they believe would raise taxpayer costs. Senate Bill 76, which prevents state officials from mandating project labor agreements on construction projects, passed the Louisiana House with strong bipartisan support in a 96 to four vote. SB 76 also passed in the Senate. More

    During an Idaho Senate hearing on two proposals that would curb union activities, James Piotrowski of Boise told lawmakers that if the plans became law, he'd start a legal battle. The Senate and House ended up approving the plans, and now Piotrowski has filed a lawsuit to block the new laws. More

    Court ruling on wage scale could have statewide impact

    In a ruling that could have statewide implications, the Indiana Court of Appeals upheld a local judge's ruling that Allen County officials used incomplete data when they established a below-union-wage scale for a renovation project two years ago. Under the state's "common wage" law, local and state governments were required to establish a minimum-wage scale for construction projects costing at least $150,000. More

    Permits for housing construction climbed in May, signaling a glimmer of optimism among homebuilders about the future of the housing market. The number of permits for future housing construction jumped to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 612,000 last month, up 8.7 percent from the revised rate of 563,000 in April, the Commerce Department said.
