Manufacturers in the U.S. churned out more cars, computers and furniture in July, easing concern that one of the mainstays of the recovery was giving way. The 0.9 percent increase in production at factories, mines and utilities was almost twice the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News and the biggest gain of the year, according to data from the Federal Reserve in Washington. The nation's first event to attract support of job creation through manufacturing was held in Baltimore and it was a roaring success. Hundreds gathered in support of the initiative, dubbed Rally for Maryland Manufacturing and hosted by the Regional Manufacturing Institute of Maryland. The rally included speakers from the state's top political leaders and manufacturers. RMI's goal was to combine industry support with high-profile endorsements in an effort to raise awareness of the benefits the manufacturing sector has to offer a recovering economy in the long run. The nation's automakers rebounded in July to increase factory production by the most since the crisis in Japan. But builders broke ground on fewer single-family houses, leaving home construction at depressed levels. General Motors Co. said it will make a plug-in hybrid Cadillac ELR that uses technology similar to its Chevrolet Volt that went on sale last year. GM plans to price the ELR less than the $57,400 Model S by Tesla Motor Inc.'s, said a person familiar with the plans. It will be at least as fast as the Volt and will probably drive farther on battery power alone, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the details are private. Total traffic for all imports entering all U.S. ports was down 6 percent in week 29, 2011, compared to the same week in 2010, according to U.S. import market data compiled by Zepol Corp. Consumers spent more on autos, furniture, clothing and gas in July, pushing up retail sales by the largest amount in four months. The gain signaled that Americans are a little more confident in the economy and could helped dispel fears that the country is headed for another recession. Retail sales rose 0.5 percent in July, the Commerce Department said recently. It was the best showing since March. The government also revised sales higher in the previous two months. Chuck Ronson, a New York trader who's driven Saab cars since 2001, ditched the automaker in July when the lease on his sedan ended. "The brand is losing money, and dealerships are closing," said Ronson, who opted for a BMW instead. "Are they going to have money or not for payroll this week? There's too much uncertainty. I wouldn't buy a Saab again." Saab Automobile, the 64-year-old Swedish carmaker sold by General Motors Co. in 2010 to Spyker Cars NV, is fighting to survive after halting production in March amid a payment dispute with suppliers.
