Led by a preeminent North American and European faculty, Advanced Critical Care Echocardiography focuses on practical elements that have specific utility for the management of cardiopulmonary failure, such as: Doppler physics, measurement of stroke volume/cardiac output (SV/CO), detailed assessment of LV and RV function, measurement of filling pressures, measurement of diastolic function, evaluation of valve function, determination of preload sensitivity, measurement of intracardiac pressures, and identification of adverse heart lung interactions.

Through hands-on training, participants will learn specific practical measurement skills relevant to the diagnosis and management of patients with cardiopulmonary failure. Attendees will also participate in case-based, interactive image interpretation sessions focused on the bedside assessment of the patient with cardiopulmonary failure using advanced critical care echocardiography.

New Inhaler Drug Approved by FDA for Chronic COPD

The US Food and Drug Administration has just announced the approval of a form of new long-term treatment for patients suffering from COPD. The new treatment is an inhaler drug combination of fluticasone furoate and vilanterol inhalation powder (Breo Ellipta). It is also approved for the treatment of exacerbations in patients with COPD.

Quiet ORs Better for Patient Safety

Music at loud decibels can contribute to miscues among surgeons and nurses in the operating room, raising the risk of medical error, researchers say. Operating rooms are noisy places, and now, a study published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons is suggesting that all that noise could contribute to miscommunication that leads to errors or issues in patient safety, says Matthew Bush, MD, and colleagues from the University of Kentucky, Lexington.

More Sleep May Decrease the Risk of Suicide in People With Insomnia

A new study, published in an online supplement to the journal Sleep, found a relationship between sleep duration and suicidal thoughts in people with insomnia. Results show that every 1-hour increase in sleep duration was associated with a 72% decrease in the likelihood of moderate or high suicide risk, in comparison with low risk. Data were adjusted for age, gender, race/ethnicity, education, and age of onset of sleep difficulties.
