Health-law test to cut readmissions lacks early results
Kaiser Health News
Obama administration officials have warned that ambitious experiments run by the health law's $10 billion innovation lab wouldn't always be successful. Now there is evidence their caution was well placed. Only a small minority of community groups getting federal reimbursement to reduce expensive hospital readmissions produced significant results compared with those from sites that weren't part of the $300 million program, according to partial, early results.

Reality TV controversy reignites patient-privacy debate
The recent controversy surrounding a reality TV show's depiction of a man's death in a New York hospital has sparked a debate about the nature of patients' privacy rights while being treated in emergency departments. The firestorm began with a recent ProPublica article, also published in the New York Times, that featured the story of Mark Chanko, who died in the emergency room at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in April 2011 after being struck by a sanitation truck outside his home in Manhattan.

Most marketplace customers have new filing requirements this tax season
Kaiser Health News
In addition to the normal thrills and chills of the income tax filing season, this year consumers will have the added excitement of figuring out how the health law figures in their 2014 taxes. The good news is that for most people the only change to their normal tax filing routine will be to check the box on their Form 1040 that says they had health insurance all year.

AHA-supported bill would help hospitals meet FY 2015 EHR requirements
AHA News Now!
Reps. Renee Ellmers reintroduced the Flexibility in Health IT Reporting Act, AHA-supported legislation that would give hospitals and eligible professionals more flexibility in meeting meaningful use requirements for electronic health records in 2015. Specifically, the legislation would shorten the 2015 reporting period to one quarter of the year from the current full-year reporting for Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Program participants using the 2014 Edition Certified EHR.

Service-line management: A behind the scenes road to value
Hospitals & Health Networks
The concept of getting to value is generating a lot of buzz in health care. But the way to reach that goal — service line management — remains very much behind the scenes. Hospitals are using a variety of strategies to cut costs while improving care quality in their service lines. Some take a well-defined approach, such as clinical co-management, in which service line governance is shared and physicians get a management fee and are eligible for bonuses tied to performance.

Sharing medical records: It's not as easy as patients think
Sioux City Journal
Sometimes, emergency department physician Joseph Liewer said he can get a patient's medical records from a hospital outside of CHE Trinity Health System in under an hour but, frequently, he said this vital information is unavailable if the medical records department at that particular hospital is closed or understaffed. "There isn't any current electronic health system that sends it to us. If it's a Mercy hospital, we have that in our own computer because of the shared electronic records, but not across other hospital systems," Liewer said.
