Most 2012 Minnesota ED visits were unnecessary
More than 1 million emergency department visits in Minnesota during 2012 may have been preventable, according to a report from the state Department of Health. In 2012, Minnesota residents used a hospital ED approximately 1.8 million times. MDH officials analyzed that year's claims and found 1.2 million ED visits, 50,000 hospital admissions and 22,000 readmissions were potentially preventable, for a combined cost of $1.9 billion, or nearly 5 percent of total healthcare spending in the state.

Rising prescription drug costs a growing concern
AHA News
The recent wave of increases in the cost of prescription drugs is straining hospital budgets and squeezing patients. Hospitals point to tactics like Canadian-based Valeant's purchase earlier this year of the rights to a pair of life-saving heart medications, Isuprel and Nitropress. The day following the acquisition, Isuprel's price rose 525 percent from $215.46 to $1,346.62 for a one-milliliter vial. Nitropress jumped 212 percent from an original price of $257.80 to $805.61 for a two-milliliter vial.

Five-star hospitals double in quarterly Hospital Compare update
The number of hospitals earning perfect scores on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' five-star scale doubled in a new round of ratings, according to an analysis by Healthcare Finance News. Reducing hospital readmissions through telemedicine partnerships with skilled nursing facilities
Telemedicine systems, including remote presence technology, have evolved over the years from stationary workstations to mobile carts to the latest "robotic" units that self-propel themselves down our hospital corridors without a driver, according to preprogrammed GPS instructions. This technology has been credited with bringing specialists, including critical care intensivists, to the bedside in hospitals where no such practitioners live or work within hundreds of miles.

Want better surgeons? Poll their coworkers
Hospitals can improve patient outcomes, teamwork and surgeons' compliance with care quality standards using a performance assessment common among Fortune 500 companies, according to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. Researchers, led by Alex B. Haynes, M.D., of Boston's Ariadne Labs, used the "360-degree" multisource feedback method for 385 surgeons across eight Harvard Medical School hospital surgical programs.

Consumers' satisfaction with coverage linked to out-of-pocket expenses
Kaiser Health News
How much money people have to fork over when they go to the doctor can make a big difference in how satisfied they are with their health plan, a recent study suggests. "It looks like it's boiling down to costs," says Paul Fronstin, director of the Employee Benefit Research Institute's health research and education program and the author of the report. The annual online survey by EBRI/Greenwald & Associates of 3,887 people examined issues related to consumer-directed health care, generally defined as plans with high deductibles that are linked to savings accounts that consumers can use to pay medical expenses.

Happy 50th birthday, Medicare. Your patients are getting healthier
Here's a bit of good news for Medicare, the popular government program that's turning 50. Older Americans on Medicare are spending less time in the hospital; they're living longer; and the cost of a typical hospital stay has actually come down over the past 15 years, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Doctors, hospitals and government administrators have put a lot of effort into making Medicare more efficient in the past 15 years.
