Senate resolution introduced to recognize National Case Management Week
Recently, senators Mark Pryor, D-Ark., and John Boozman, R-Ark., introduced a Senate resolution designating the week of Oct. 12-18, 2014, as "National Case Management Week" to "recognize the role of case management in improving health care outcomes for patients." Standard handoff practices help children's hospitals cut errors
Hospitals can cut handoff-related errors nearly 70 percent by standardizing care transfers during shift changes, according to a study published ahead of print in the journal Pediatrics. For the study, 23 children's hospitals joined a quality improvement collaborative with the goal of cutting care failures tied to handoffs. Participating hospitals used evidence-based recommendations for handoff content and intent, standardized handoff techniques and clear-cut responsibility transitions, according to the study.

According to author Ilene MacDonald: Recently, FierceHealthcare covered a story that struck a nerve with readers, raising questions about social media use, HIPAA, the bias shown to doctors versus nurses and firing practices at hospitals. In case you missed it, an emergency room nurse in New York was fired after posting a photo of an empty trauma room after clinicians saved the life of a man hit by a subway train.

Patient-centered care about more than just financial gains
Hospital Impact
According to author Thomas Dahlborg: Recently, my intention was to follow up my recent post highlighting kindness, compassion and patient-centered care with additional positive signs of a healthcare transformation where patients and families are engaged, care teams are healthy and whole and positioned to honor their patients, and patient preferences, patient safety and healthcare outcomes are all being optimized. And then two things happened.

Former CMS head breaks down ACO lessons to date
A new approach to delivering — and paying for — healthcare made its debut three years ago and has been picking up steam ever since. Accountable care organizations are growing rapidly nationwide, offering the promise of coordinated patient care at a lower cost. Yet, making the transition away from operating as a single, discrete practice unit according to a fee-for-service payment model can, admittedly, be difficult. Created as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, ACOs are drawing close scrutiny from many different stakeholders.
