AHA News
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Oct. 6 released a final rule for the Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Records Incentive Programs that modifies the reporting period in 2015 to a 90-day period aligned with the calendar year. The AHA welcomed the move. The rule also adds other flexibilities, including reducing the share of patients that must use the patient portal from 5 percent to at least one patient and modifying the summary of care requirements. The evolution of ACOs and what it may look like in the future
Accountable care organizations (ACOs) have had early signs of success but the care delivery model continues to undergo changes to meet the needs of providers who strive to improve care and lower costs. Despite the frequent changes, the ACO model is definitely here to stay. Indeed, the Department of Health and Human Services' recent announcement that it will tie half of fee-for-service payments to alternative payment models by 2018 has made the model more significant than ever.

Better healing from better hospital design
Harvard Business Review
Bright, beautiful lobbies featuring an atrium filled with local flora. Rooms with big windows and access to outdoor gardens. Dining options served up by one of the top chefs in the world. Innovative new hospital designs have changed patients' experiences and expectations of what a hospital should be. These sleek buildings have design features found in many high-end hotels — and they are built with the express intention not just of increasing patient satisfaction but of reducing costs and improving outcomes.

Patient satisfaction varies by care setting
Healthcare professionals in search of a simple rubric for establishing high satisfaction rates across multiple care settings in pediatric care may find their goal is highly elusive. Consumerism: Changing how hospitals do business
Executive Insight
With the rising cost of healthcare and a more open marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act, the patient-doctor experience is more important than ever. Healthcare is being held to the same standard as any other consumer purchase, where quality of service and value are top of mind. Patients no longer solely rely on word-of-mouth to find healthcare providers or take hours off work to wait in the doctor's office.

Surprising number of patients request intervention
Patients who complete advance care directives want to be free of pain at the end of their lives, but many also request interventions such as antibiotics and breathing assistance, a new study published in The Journal of Medical Ethics found. The study of 491 Texas patients ranging in age from 19 to 94 found that nearly one-third asked for medical intervention. Patients younger than 50 were more likely to request intervention, the study found, while patients older than 50 were more likely to refuse aggressive care.

Telemedicine expands despite uncertain financial prospects
Kaiser Health News
Say you're a rural Midwestern farmer in bed recovering from a major illness at your local hospital. It's time for nurse's check in, but there's no knock on the door. At Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, just over the foot of the bed, a camera whirls around and a monitor lights up to show a smiling face with a headset on. "Good afternoon, this is Jeff with SafeWatch. Just doing my afternoon rounds," he said in this training exercise.
