The JMWH editorial team teamed up with the ACNM communications department and public relations firm for a public relations blitz about the recent JMWH article on the increased proportion of midwife-attended births in the United States. This resulted in several positive media stories about midwives and was a great example of the benefit of ACNM's increased investment in public relations. Some of the stories published as a result of these efforts included those in Time Magazine, Mothering, and Discovery News. More

Midwife receives Fullbright Scholar Award

Marie Hastings-Tolsma, CNM, PhD, associate professor at the University of Colorado College of Nursing, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and conduct research in South Africa. Her research will focus on indigenous plants commonly consumed by women in South Africa related to pregnancy and birth, particularly those used to initiate labor and to accelerate labor progress. More

George C. Stoney, documentary filmmaker of the classic 1953 movie All My Babies, died recently at his home in New York. The movie, which includes a 15-minute sequence showing a live birth, became a staple of medical school curriculums, and was distributed by Unesco and the World Health Organization. More

Breastfeeding helps mothers stay slim long-term

A new study published in the International Journal of Obesity found that women who breastfed their children have a lower body mass index than women who did not. The research consisted of 740,000 post-menopausal UK women. Scientists found that the women's BMI increased according to how many children they had. However, those who breastfed had a considerably lower average BMI, no matter how many children they conceived. More

NICHQ launches Best Fed Beginnings to increase breastfeeding rates in hospitals

Although breastfeeding is one of the most effective preventive health measures for infants and mothers, half of US-born babies are given formula within the first week, and by nine months, only 31 percent of babies are breastfeeding at all. To help reverse these trends, 90 hospitals have been selected to participate in Best Fed Beginnings, a national initiative to increase the number of US hospitals supporting new mothers' choice to breastfeed. More

Contraceptive use averts 272,000 maternal deaths worldwide

A new study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health estimates that contraceptive use likely prevents more than 272,000 maternal deaths from childbirth each year and that satisfying the global unmet need for contraception could reduce maternal deaths an additional 30 percent. Their findings are published by The Lancet as part of a series of articles on family planning. More

PTSD Coach app wins innovation award

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense's PTSD Coach mobile application marked its first anniversary with receipt of an award for innovation in the advancement of telemedicine from the American Telemedicine Association. The app provides education, symptoms-tracking tools, self-assessment, and connections to support individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder. PTSD Coach is available for free download for both iPhone and Android devices. More
