Acute illnesses associated with insecticides used to control bed bugs

The common bed bug, Cimex lectularius, is a wingless, reddish-brown insect that requires blood meals from humans, other mammals, or birds to survive. Bed bugs are not considered to be disease vectors, but they can reduce quality of life by causing anxiety, discomfort, and sleeplessness. More

People who are exposed to higher levels of traffic pollution have a higher risk of heart attack for about six hours, researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine reported in the BMJ (British Medical Journal). The authors say that those with diagnosed heart disease should try to avoid being in areas where traffic pollution levels are high. More

NIH-funded study connects gene variant to response to asthma drugs

A genetic variant may explain why some people with asthma do not respond well to inhaled corticosteroids, the most widely prescribed medicine for long-term asthma control. Researchers found that asthma patients who have two copies of a specific gene variant responded only one-third as well to steroid inhalers as those with two copies of the regular gene. More

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued a revised hazard alert to hair salon owners and workers about potential formaldehyde exposure from working with certain hair smoothing and straightening products. The revised alert was prompted by the results of agency investigations, a warning letter issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and factually incorrect information recently sent to salons by a company that manufactures hair products.
