Rocky Mountain Collegian    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Only 7 percent of those working in natural resources fields are minorities, but Colorado State University's Gillian Bowser and Mark Brown want to change this statistic. In March, the Rocky Mountain Sustainability and Science Network, which was founded by and is under the leadership of Bowser and Brown, received a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. The goal of the project is to provide minorities with the chance to receive hands-on experience in the field of sustainability and to help them learn valuable skills in global leadership. More

Bloomberg via The Herald-Sun    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Fewer than half of U.S. students are proficient in science, renewing questions about the country's global competitiveness, the Education Department said. A third of the nation's fourth graders, 30 percent of eighth graders and 21 percent of 12th graders are performing at or above the proficient level in science, according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Male students scored higher than females in all three grades, according to the assessment. Black and Hispanic students underperformed white students, while Asian-American students outperformed those in the 12th grade. More

Science Careers    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Despite a wide range of initiatives to support women scientists in their careers, considerable barriers remain. One hurdle is the uncertainty of science careers. "The main problem in science is that there's not much job security," Ruth Brown, a Ph.D. candidate, explains. "You have to apply for each contract, and you feel that you are constantly fighting for your own job." More

Don't be afraid to promote diversity
BNet    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Read your company's policies on promoting racial, ethnic and gender diversity. See a tone of negativity, with words such as "comply" often at the forefront? They make you want to toe the line, rather than do what's in the best interest of the organization. In other words, they instill fear, and the discussions that come out of them are often negative rather than positive. And the resulting actions might be just as bad, such as a white supervisor afraid of giving a minority employee constructive criticism out of fear of a discrimination action. More

Key win for affirmative action in Texas
Inside Higher Ed    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A federal appeals court ruled that the University of Texas is not barred from considering race in admissions even though the use of a "10 percent" plan helps the university achieve some level of diversity in its student body. The decision — while likely to be appealed — is a significant victory for proponents of affirmative action in higher education because of the novel argument used, unsuccessfully, by the plaintiffs in the case. The plaintiffs focused on the requirement set by the U.S. Supreme Court that consideration of race in government programs must not only be justified but also must be "narrowly tailored." More

Diversity Best Practices    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Armed with the size, social media savviness and vision of how the world ought to be, Generation Y is proving critics — who previous tagged this cohort as lazy and wholly self-interested — wrong as they strive for change around the globe. Gen Yers, a group rapidly entering adulthood, account for the majority of the world's population. Couple this with the rise in social media access and you have what analysts are calling a perfect storm for social change. More
