Key Organizations Meet at ACSM for Strategic Summit on Concussion in Youth Sports
Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
National sport governing bodies and medical experts from across the United States gathered at the ACSM National Center last week to devise strategies for youth concussion prevention, awareness and education.

Stanley Herring, M.D., FACSM, moderated the discussion. Herring has been instrumental in ACSM’s leadership of the concussion initiative and the passage of the Zackery Lystedt Law in Washington State. The Lystedt Law requires young athletes suspected of sustaining a concussion to be cleared by a medical professional before returning to play.

Summit participants included the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USA Football, the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and many more. Outcomes will include concussion awareness, education and advocacy initiatives.

Policy Corner: Committee Holding Hearings on Let's Move Campaign
Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
This week the House Education and Labor Committee and the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee are holding hearings that follow up on First Lady Michelle Obama’s stated focus on combating childhood obesity. In early February, the First Lady started a national campaign entitled Let’s Move, which places a high priority on physical activity. As these issues continue to be a priority for policy makers, ACSM will search for opportunities to inform Members of Congress and advocate for the inclusion of physical activity in relevant legislation or programs. For more information, visit the Let's Move Web site or read the White House press release.
