ACSM was saddened to learn of the passing of Martti J. Karvonen at the age of 90 years. Karvonen´s name is well-known to the researchers and practitioners in sports and exercise medicine all over the world, especially through the “Karvonen equation (Training heart rate=[maximal heart rate-resting heart rate] X desired exercise intensity)” from 1957 to assess individually effective exercise training heart rate. In memory of Michael L. Pollock, ACSM's 26th President, the ACSM Foundation will award two scholarships to graduate students who are presenting research projects at the 2009 ACSM Annual Meeting in Seattle. The awards will be based on the two best research projects, focused in the areas of health and fitness and/or clinical exercise physiology. The research will be evaluated by a committee of four ACSM Fellows who worked extensively with Dr. Pollock during his career, including two Past Presidents. NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Men who want to keep their bones strong may want to add running to their exercise routine, new research suggests. In a study of 42 athletic men ages 19 to 45, researchers found that running seemed to have even bigger benefits for bone mass than strength training did.

Over the years, Americans have become inured to salt. Most people have no idea how much salt they consume - on average, about 9 to 12 g (or 3,600 to 4,800 mg of sodium) per person per day, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). That's twice the amount recommended by the government.
