Speak Up to Debunk Myths About Exercise, Energy Balance
TIME magazine’s Aug. 17 cover article prompted many ACSM members to write, blog, tweet and otherwise speak out to correct the article’s misleading premise—that exercise commonly inhibits weight loss by overstimulating the appetite. Using their own knowledge as well as information from experts in exercise and energy balance, many have reiterated the fundamental facts that exercise brings manifest health benefits and should be part of anyone’s program of wellness and weight management. The upshot is a vigorous national dialogue that is bringing ACSM key messaging to the forefront.

As a professional with expertise that can add to this important dialogue, this presents an opportunity for you to speak up in your community. More

Play a Key Role in the President’s Council for ACSM
ACSM is proud to be a Science Partner of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (PCPFS). This relationship allows us to work together on conferences, journal articles and position statements, and gives ACSM another voice for local and federal fitness advocacy. As a result of this partnership, ACSM members have an exciting opportunity to become coordinators of PCPFS Demonstration Centers in each state. Read a job description for state coordinators.

In identifying a coordinator for your state or volunteering for the task yourself, you will be helping a partnership that marries ACSM's commitment to science and service with the Council's efforts to keep Americans active, healthy and fit.

These states do not have an ACSM member to serve as State Coordinator:

You can also join an existing team in states that already have coordinators secured. If you are interested in becoming a Coordinator or joining a team, please email Chris Sawyer, Director of Membership & Chapter Services at
