Active Voice: Overcoming Fear of Movement due to Back Pain in the Obese Older Adult

Dr. Heather Vincent is a research faculty member in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Florida (UF) College of Medicine in Gainesville, Fla. She is the director of the Human Dynamics Research Laboratories and UF Sports Performance Center. Her research is focused on developing appropriate exercise-based interventions for obesity to improve the physiological, mechanical and psychological disease risk factors and attenuate musculoskeletal disease progression. She is currently serving on the ACSM Consumer Information Committee.

This commentary presents Dr. Vincent’s views related to a research article she and her colleagues had published in the September 2014 issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise® (MSSE).

Physical activity is recommended to obese individuals by their doctors for weight loss and overall joint heath. Activities that increase caloric expenditure are helpful for reducing weight and offloading the joints of the body. However, obese individuals commonly experience low back or knee pain during exercise, leading them to avoid exercise. Avoidance behavior initiates a cycle of continued weight gain, worsened joint pain, pain catastrophizing, fear of movement (termed kinesiophobia) and disability.

Call for Nominations: FASEB Excellence in Science Award
The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, of which ACSM is a member society, is seeking nominations for its 2016 Excellence in Science Award that recognizes the significant accomplishments of women scientists. We look forward to another list of nominees that reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of international science, containing the names of outstanding women in science who have accomplished scientific work of lasting impact and have also contributed substantially to training the next generation of scientists.

Nominators and their candidates must be members of a FASEB member society. Self-nominations will not be accepted. All nominations must be submitted on the FASEB Excellence in Science Award website. Access to the site will be available as of January 1, 2015 by clicking here. Nominations must be submitted on the FASEB award website by March 1, 2015.

Exercise, Physical Therapy May Help Ease Pain of Arthritis

Regular exercise and physical therapy may benefit people with hip and knee arthritis, new research suggests.

The study included 206 people with hip and knee osteoarthritis, average age 66, who were divided into two groups. One group received usual care, while the other group had regular exercise, physical therapy or both added to their standard care.

After two years, those who did exercise and/or physical therapy had greater improvements in pain, stiffness and physical function than those who received usual medical care alone, the investigators found.

The study findings are scheduled for presentation Saturday at the American College of Rheumatology's annual meeting in Boston. Research presented at meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.
