Q&A: ACSM Hosts 2010 World Heart Games for Cardiac Rehab Athletes
Share

The ACSM World Heart Games are helping patients at high risk for or with
diagnoses of cardiovascular diseases "reclaim the joy of sports." The event is an Olympic-style competition symbolizing that these patients can engage in and enjoy appropriate and invigorating sports competition like any other athletes. To appreciate the exhilaration experienced in these Games, just watch this video clip, showing patients at the Heart and Lung Games, held at Chicago in 2006.
These Games had their beginnings nearly 20 years ago in Georgia with efforts involving F. Stuart Sanders, M.D., FACSM, and his healthcare colleagues in cardiac rehabilitation. Sanders and several ACSM Fellows and other national leaders in cardiac rehabilitation have diligently planned the upcoming event, which is scheduled for May 14-15, 2010, at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga.
Q: What exactly are the ACSM World Heart Games?
A: The Games are a two-day Olympic-style competition for patients at either high risk for or with diagnoses for various cardiovascular diseases. The competition is an excellent opportunity for these special athletes to engage in a range of sports events that are consistent with their health status and capabilities.

Former Major League Baseball player Mike Pagliarulo, prominent ACSM members, and athletics leaders from around Indianapolis visited the ACSM National Center last week.
Pagliarulo and fellow MLB alumni Chris Martin and Willie Fraser joined William Roberts, M.D., FACSM, Michael Bergeron, Ph.D., FACSM, and John DiFiori, M.D., FACSM, for a two-day "thinktank" meeting that focused on baseball and youth sports safety. The group will help guide ACSM programs and
statements on youth sports, forming a cohesive, streamlined approach to maximizing safety and education for young athletes and those who work with them.
Following the Nov. 19 session, ACSM welcomed Indianapolis-area athletic organizations, youth sports leaders, journalists and ACSM members to a networking reception and meet-and-greet with Pagliarulo, Fraser and Martin.

Policy Corner: Senate Health Care Bill Includes Healthy Lifestyle Provisions
Share

Last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) unveiled a sweeping health care bill that would expand health insurance coverage to 30 million more Americans at an estimated cost of $849 billion over 10 years. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO), which is the nonpartisan entity charged with analyzing the cost of proposed legislation, estimated that the proposal would reduce
the federal deficit by $127 billion over the next 10 years and by more than $600 billion in the following decade. ACSM was pleased to learn that the bill includes prevention and wellness provisions that are supported by Democrats and Republicans alike, including establishing a Prevention and Public Health fund, which would be funded at nearly $5 billion over five years and authorizes the creation of community-based prevention and wellness programs to promote healthy lifestyles, including
increased physical activity levels.
