CEPA Seeks National Provider Identifier Recognition for Physiologists

The Clinical Exercise Physiology Association (CEPA), an ACSM affiliate society, has been working to make clinical exercise physiologists more recognized by the federal governmentís National Provider Identifier. CEPA encourages all clinical exercise physiologists to get involved and increase the visibility of their field.

What is a National Provider Identifier?
A National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique 10-digit identification number issued to health care providers in the U.S. by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. All individual HIPAA-covered health care providers (physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, physician assistants, chiropractors, physical therapists, athletic trainers, etc.) or organizations (hospitals, home health care agencies, nursing homes, laboratories, pharmacies, medical equipment companies, etc.) must obtain an NPI for use in HIPAA standard transactions. Typically, most health care providers working in a hospital or clinic setting would be filed under their organizationís NPI designation. It is unlikely that a clinical exercise physiologist working in this setting will have an individual NPI need, but itís not unheard of. Those working as an Entity Type I Provider (someone who furnishes health care to patients and does not practice as part of a health care organization) or sole proprietor will require an individual NPI enumeration code for billing purposes.

Clinical Exercise Physiologists Act Now
Inclusion of the clinical exercise physiologist in a national code set of health care providers proves to be one more step toward bringing the clinical exercise profession to the forefront of health care. In order to increase visibility of clinical exercise physiologists and the work they do, CEPA is encouraging all clinical exercise physiologists to apply for an individual NPI number*. Please visit the CEPA website at www.cepa-acsm.org for information on how to apply.

*If you receive an individual NPI number and work for a health care group, you may not use the number for billing purposes. CEPA is simply encouraging you to apply to boost the presence of clinical exercise physiologists on the national radar.
