Policy Corner: PEP Program Threatened
Proposal Would Weaken Funding Physical Education

The Administration has proposed significant changes to the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) this year, seeking to consolidate it with five other programs into a new “Successful, Safe and Healthy Students” authority. Tens of thousands of students stand to benefit from these grants of $100 million in FY 2011, the only federal grant program to help initiate, improve and expand school-based physical activity for children. It is vital to maintain PEP as a stand-alone program with funding as this may be the only funding that school physical education programs receive. What can you do?

ACSM urges you to contact your Senators and Representative to ensure adequate funding for PEP grants. View the ACSM Action Alert at http://capwiz.com/acsm/issues/alert/?alertid=15167936. You can use the sample language provided, or create your own message. Then, please ask your friends and colleagues to do the same by simply forwarding this issue of SMB or the Action Alert itself.

For those interested in applying for Carol M. White Physical Education Program grants for FY 2010, notice was posted June 18 at http://www2.ed.gov/programs/whitephysed/2010-215f.doc.
