Kevin Henry — A great friend to dental assistants ADAA Share
Thirteen years ago, Kevin Henry was a sports public relations person in Colorado. He had the opportunity to take a position with Penn Well Publishing and move to Oklahoma. Henry, an American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA) Foundation member, became the managing editor of "Proofs, Dental Economics" and "Dental Equipment and Materials," which are published by Penn Well. The publishing company had a publication for dental hygiene and all the publications for the dentists and dental trade industry — but not one for the dental assistants. Henry has always been a "big fan" of dental assistants, so nine years ago he started a publication called "The Dental Office". He started talking to dental assistants at dental trade shows and started gathering information on dental assistants and their profession. He now has an online dental assistant newsletter called "Dental Assisting Digest".

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that results from the multifaceted interaction between bacteria found in the microbial biofilm and factors initiated by the host response. The pathogenic bacteria colonize on the tooth surface and in the gingival sulcus. A variety of systemic and local antibiotics and antimicrobial products are used to control the bacterial aspect of the disease; however, the host response is thought to be the most important activity in the breakdown of connective tissue and bone, which are key features of the disease process. Scientists are reporting identification of two substances in licorice — used extensively in Chinese traditional medicine — that kill the major bacteria responsible for tooth decay and gum disease, the leading causes of tooth loss in children and adults. In a study in ACS' Journal of Natural Products, they say that these substances could have a role in treating and preventing tooth decay and gum disease. The Oral Cancer Foundation is encouraging the dental community to get involved in Oral Cancer Awareness Month this April 2012 by offering free oral cancer screenings to the public in an effort to raise awareness of this disease across the U.S. The foundation is asking dental and medical professionals nationwide to act as the first line of defense against oral cancer through the process of early discovery, and to raise public awareness of this cause by opening their doors for at least a half-day, during the month of April, to screen members of their community.
