Last chance: Student Chapter Grant applications due Sept. 30
AEG
The deadline to submit the Fall 2013 Student Chapter Grant application cannot be extended any further. Submit your application by Monday, Sept. 30. The Student Chapter Grants are competitive, $250 grants. Two grants are awarded to two student chapters each spring and fall. Download the Student Chapter Grant application here.

AEG K-12 Science Fair: Students shine!

The inaugural AEG K-12 Science Fair, held at the 56th AEG Annual Meeting, was a great success. Six projects were presented and subjects ranged from geomorphology on Earth to craters on Mars. These talented students spent over two hours explaining their research to judges and Annual Meeting attendees, and blew us away with their knowledge.

A Plan for Moving Forward

As our members may be aware, AEG has been facing several years of limping membership and coincident revenue impacts. As part of the association's business planning and execution, we have been analyzing our market, identifying expanded target demographics to market member benefits and assessing the needs of these potential customers. The Strategic Planning Committee identified a Needs Assessment as the most appropriate tool to help the association identify demographic needs while simultaneously examining how effectively we currently deliver on those needs.

Impact of societies and professional development on early-career underrepresented minority faculty
American Geosciences Institute
The American Geosciences Institute and the National Academy of Engineering held a professional development workshop that included sessions involving professional societies, teaching techniques and campus leadership. Attendees' involvement with professional societies increased slightly following the workshop and over the course of the following 13 months. In general, the frequency with which attendees served on professional society committees, attended society meetings, received funding from a society, or attended a lecture sponsored by a professional society increased following the workshop over the following year

Colorado now tracking 10 oil and gas spills in flood zones
The Denver Post
Rushing floodwaters loaded with heavy debris damaged oil and gas pipes and tanks, causing the two large spills that Colorado and federal regulators were tracking. Another eight releases, whose cause is undetermined, were classified as minor by the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission — sheens, for example, coming off of a piece of equipment rather than a measurable volume of petroleum product.
