Geoscience Currents #77: Quantitative and core science skills of 2013 geoscience graduates

There has been increased attention towards the quantitative knowledge and skills that recent graduates gained while working on their degree. American Geosciences Institute asked recent geoscience graduates with their bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees to indicate the quantitative and core science courses they took before graduation. Over 60 percent of all graduates take Calculus II, but there is a precipitous drop off in quantitative skills after that course for bachelor's and master's graduates. AGI's 2013 Status of Recent Geoscience Graduates Report Released

In the first study of its kind, the American Geosciences Institute Workforce Program has published the results of the National Geoscience Student Exit Survey, which documents the experiences of graduating geosciences majors. Initial findings support that these new graduates, at all levels, shared some common traits such as the importance of field experiences and exposure to Earth science at the K-12 level.
