Alberta election raises hopes for renewables, new ideas

It's one of a few axioms Alberta's new energy minister, Margaret McCuaig-Boyd, should keep in mind as she takes over what is arguably the second most important portfolio in government.

Geothermal research could come to Grande Prairie

The City of Grande Prairie is moving to participate in another renewable energy project after a delegation at a recent council meeting piqued interest. The city has been participating in a solar energy experiment with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology since 2013, and now might diversify its green research. Jonathan Banks, a University of Alberta research associate with a background in geothermal energy, pitched the green dream and explained he was looking for financial assistance to build geothermal reservoir models within the next year.

Calgary to examine skipping Green Line bus rapid transit, building LRT right away
Metro News
Calgary will look at ways to fast-track plans for the Green Line LRT, skipping the idea of first building a bus-only rapid transit route that would later see light-rail tracks added to it. After a number of small amendments, a motion from Couns. Shane Keating, Sean Chu and Jim Stevenson to "move straight to LRT" was passed recently at city council by an 11-3 vote.

New commercial centre planned
Sherwood Park News
The business world in Sherwood Park will soon be stepping it up a notch. Part of the executive team and partner of Hungerford Properties, Michael Hungerford said the company is planning a new commercial area in the northwest portion of the Park. The Paragon Business Park will be building on 11 acres on the inside corner of Broadview Road, Bethel Drive and Bethel Way. "In the first phase, we're building an office building and a warehouse building," Hungerford said.

British Columbians are conservative with electricity

Electricity consumption in Canada is declining and it's largely thanks to west coasters. According to Statistics Canada, Canada's demand for electricity recently totalled 50.1 million megawatt hours, down 5.1 per cent from last year's levels. Lower demand in British Columbia, as well as in Quebec and Alberta, largely contributed to this decline.

Renewable energy employs 7.7 million people worldwide
International Institute for Sustainable Development
The International Renewable Energy Agency has released a report stating that the renewable energy industry employs more than 7.7 million people worldwide, an 18 per cent increase from 6.5 million in 2014. The report, titled Renewable Energy and Jobs — Annual Review 2015, also provides, for the first time, a global estimate of jobs supported by large hydro-power.
