Alberta to double carbon tax by 2017, strengthen emissions reduction targets

Alberta will be doubling its carbon levy over the next two years — the first change in the tax's eight-year history — as the province works on broader measures to burnish its image as a responsible oil producer. The tougher regulations and a royalty review announcement come at a tough time for Alberta's energy industry as a plunge in oil prices has led to thousands of layoffs and shelved expansion plans across the oil patch.

Land owners call on province to review power line near Cowboy Trail

Land owners in the Livingstone Range are hoping the Notley government steps in to stop an overhead power line in southwestern Alberta because they believe it's no longer needed. The $500 to $750 million project, called the Castle Rock Ridge to Chapel Rock transmission project, includes building a substation and transmission line between 20 and 41 kilometres long.

Climate regulations called a 'step in the right direction'

Environment Minister Shannon Phillips announced sweeping measures in an attempt to curtail provincial carbon dioxide emissions.

Surge in power usage expected during heat wave

A forecast of high temperatures means a surge in electricity usage in Alberta is likely, according to the Alberta Electric System Operator. The temperature in Calgary is expected to hover above and below 30C, with no rain anticipated, says Environment Canada.

Solar project approved

The Devon Community Centre will soon be getting its power from the largest star in the sky. Council recently approved a 100 kW-h net zero solar energy project for the community centre, a project that would provide for net zero electricity consumption. A media released explained for the past several months council had been discussing the idea of installing solar panels on Town of Devon facilities.

Don't give up on carbon capture technology, Saskatchewan tells Alberta

As the government of Alberta considers how to shift away from plans to capture and store carbon, the head of a similar program in Saskatchewan has one word of advice: Don't. Mike Monea, president of carbon capture initiatives at the provincial utility SaskPower, said carbon capture and storage, which involves trapping carbon dioxide and pumping it into the ground, is essential to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

GE leaders and customers throughout the U.S. and Canada were joined by state and local government representatives and the media for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. GE invests in ANSI/IEEE medium-voltage product portfolio

GE's Industrial Solutions business, which has been investing heavily in its medium-voltage (MV) offerings over the course of the past year, recently announced its new GE-manufactured, ANSI/IEEE, two-high SecoGear air-insulated MV switchgear is expected to be available later this year. This latest addition to GE's MV portfolio is focused on commercial construction applications.
