Arizona shooting touches sports The New York Times Share     A moment of silence was held before the Bowl Championship Series title game on Jan. 10 in honor of the victims of the recent shooting in Tucson, a two-hour drive from the game's site in Glendale, Ariz. Officials for the Fiesta Bowl, which hosted the game, did not specify whether additional security measures were taken in the wake of the shooting that wounded Representative Gabrielle Giffords and left six people dead. All results from manufacturers' laboratory testing are kept tightly confidential by industry agreement. The graphs and percentages that make it into marketing materials — and are often embellished by sales representatives — have become questionable enough that the Federal Trade Commission has been asked to investigate helmet companies for misleading safety claims. Spiller and Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry took to the gridiron recently, they weren't wearing their usual adiZero Scorch footwear, which weigh a still-featherweight 8.6 ounces each. Legislation has been introduced in the Indiana Senate that would provide legal requirements for the treatment of head injuries at high school athletic events. The protocols follow the requirements already instituted by the Indiana High School Athletic Association. "The proposal in its current form is both acceptable and welcomed by the (Indiana High School Athletic) Association," said Bobby Cox, who will take over as IHSAA commissioner Feb. 1. "The law further emphasizes the importance of monitoring concussions, but it doesn't change what we're doing." The International Federation of American Football has selected 40 players from eight countries and four continents for the World Team roster to face the U.S Under-19 National Team, assembled by USA Football on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Westlake High School Stadium in Austin, Texas. The annual game will match a 45-player World Team, which will be completed in the coming weeks, against 45 of the top high school seniors from the United States. The World Team will feature the best players age 19-and-under selected from among the 59 IFAF member countries under Canadian head coach Greg Marshall, whose coaching staff is selected from eight countries.
