FSIS addresses humane treatment of poultry

In a notice issued Wednesday, USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service gave inspectors new directions for what to do if they witness mistreatment of live poultry during routine inspection of poultry plants. The new memo also updated the process for writing noncompliance records.

FSIS to propose changes to Salmonella, Campylobacter verification testing

USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service is preparing a proposal and seeking comments on new pathogen reduction performance standards for Salmonella and Campylobacter in raw chicken parts and not-ready-to-eat comminuted chicken and turkey products. The agency is also announcing its plans to begin sampling raw chicken parts to gain additional information on the prevalence and the microbiological characteristics of Salmonella and Campylobacter in those products.
