Since the first modern-day supermarket opened nearly a century ago, there had been little change in the grocery retail space, until very recently with the emerging popularity of e-commerce. While other online retail had seen growth early on, the trend took longer to make its mark on grocery. In fact, new research and insights from Acosta show that 97 percent of all consumer packaged goods dollars are still being spent in brick-and-mortar retail stores. However, the ability to click and collect and purchase boxed-meal delivery services is evidence that U.S. grocery shoppers are warming to online retail, as 28 percent now prefer to purchase groceries online regularly.

More than half of consumers report they’re familiar with “clean label,” but just 38 percent indicated a strong understanding of its exact definition, according to preliminary results of new research by Kerry.
Rather, the study reflected that respondents have a multifaceted interpretation of the commonly used industry term. Participants associated popular descriptors such as “all natural,” “non-genetically modified organisms” and “no additives or preservatives” with the term as well as other product attributes such as “farm grown,” “sustainably produced,” “minimally processed” and “made with real ingredients.”

Sanitizers are often used to kill microbes on produce. The ban had been set to expire Jan. 1, but Russia extended it after the EU extended its trade sanctions on Russia through Jan. 31.

Global demand for food and agriculture products is projected to slow "considerably" over the next decade, mainly due to weakening consumption in China, the U.N. food agency said. Mexico is no longer the biggest buyer of corn from the U.S., a sign that trade tensions are pushing American grain toward other markets while its southern neighbor lines up new suppliers.
Bloomberg reports that sales to Mexico through May were $1.04 billion, down 6.7 percent from a year earlier. C.H. Guenther & Son Inc. recently became the new owner of Les Plats du Chef, a manufacturer of gourmet frozen foods based in Montreal, Quebec. The company was acquired from Claridge Inc., a private investment firm owned by Stephen Bronfman. Details of the transaction were not disclosed.
Chef Michel Lachapelle and his wife founded Plats du Chef in 1981 as a manufacturer of chef-quality appetizers. The business eventually expanded to include a variety of frozen foods. Claridge acquired Plats du Chef in 2002, and the business grew to include frozen soups, dips, snacks, appetizers and meals with a customer base of retail and food service clients.
