Big Food will disclose chemical info to FDA

Food companies are trying to beat the federal government's push to make chemicals in food more transparent. The Grocery Manufacturers Association announced a major new initiative Wednesday that will give the FDA access to a large database of safety information for chemicals commonly used in processed foods.

Food safety regulations will change industry, Brackett says

The FDA's new food safety regulations aren't the only changes facing fresh produce marketers, but the coming rules likely will be the most far-reaching, Robert Brackett, a former FDA official and current director of the Institute for Food Safety and Health at the Illinois Institute of Technology, said in a recent speech, "Food Safety Issues on the Horizon: Thinking Differently."

How Foster Farms is solving the case of the mystery Salmonella

Foster Farms, California's biggest chicken producer, has been accused of poisoning people with Salmonella bacteria. After an outbreak last fall, the U.S. Department of Agriculture threatened to shut down three of the company's plants. Since then, though, the company has reduced its rates of Salmonella contamination dramatically.

Last week, the Russian consumer authority announced that it would shut down several McDonald's restaurants in Moscow. The authority cited health-code violations, but it has long been known to wield its power almost exclusively to political ends.
