The latest price index report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics finds that consumer prices recorded their biggest increase in eight months in September. Unfortunately, the tide didn't lift all boats, with food prices remaining fundamentally flat. The food price index eked out a negligible 0.1 percent increase, led by inflation creeping back into the food-away-from-home (dining out) index, which rose 0.3 percent in September.

Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, for the moment, has backed off his controversial plan to transfer the U.S. Codex Office, which works on international food standards, from the U.S. Department of Agricutlure's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service to a new trade office in the department.

Mann Packing, one of the largest suppliers of fresh vegetables in North America, has issued a massive recall of its products in the U.S. and Canada.
The Salinas, California-based company issued an Oct. 19 voluntary recall of freshly cut vegetables — many of them products that appear in grocery freezer aisles — that were widely distributed across the continent. Executives at Mann Packing decided to recall their products after a single positive result for Listeria was discovered during a random test by Canadian food inspectors.
