Third-party audits play key role in FSMA, food safety progress

At this point in time, the use of third-party audits has potential to be a massive success in food safety or a dismal failure — depending on the outcome of the continued momentum to build a robust system.     White House launches full-court press on fiscal cliff

    Tennessee selected for food safety center

    The University of Tennessee and the state Department of Health are partnering to develop training to improve responses to foodborne illnesses and outbreaks in Tennessee and across the country. The Food Safety Modernization Act directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to create five Integrated Food Safety Centers of Excellence at state health departments across the country, and Tennessee was selected as the site of one of those centers.     Judge recuses himself in pink slime lawsuit

    Report: Most pork positive for Yersinia

    In a new study of raw pork chops and ground pork, Consumer Reports found 69 percent samples were contaminated with Yersinia enterocolitica, according to a report published by the group today. A lesser-known foodborne pathogen, Yersinia enterocolitica can cause fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea, lasting one to three weeks, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More
