Dozens of senators sign letter urging farm bill, fiscal cliff package

More than 30 senators signed a letter Thursday urging their colleagues to consider rolling the farm bill into a potential fiscal cliff package. Led by Sens. Max Baucus, D-Mont., and John Hoeven, R-N.D., the group of 33 senators stressed that their senate-passed farm bill provides $23 billion in deficit reduction "while making smart, common-sense reforms that ensure the farm safety net works for both the American taxpayer and the American agricultural producer."

Senator pushes for rule on beef labels in wake of news series

"I firmly believe prompt action is required in order to protect the health of American consumers from serious foodborne illness," Sen. Wyoming restaurant closes for cleaning after norovirus outbreak

The Golden Corral restaurant in Casper, Wyo., is closed until at least dinnertime Friday after a suspected foodborne virus outbreak at the location affected more than 150 people, according to David Giesen, president of franchisee Golden DBL Inc. of Denver. The restaurant was closed Thursday afternoon. Giesen said the shutdown is voluntary while staff members clean and disinfect the restaurant and the Natrona County Health Department continues its investigation.

OSHA proposes $128,000 fine for cooked meat manufacturer

The Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration Wednesday cited Five Star Custom Foods Ltd. in Fort Worth, Texas, with 25 serious violations, the agency announced. Proposed penalties total $128,000. OSHA opened an investigation in June under its emphasis program on process safety management for covered chemical facilities.
