Interval training can cut exercise hours sharply
The Associated Press Share
People who complain they have no time to exercise may soon need another excuse. Some experts say intense exercise sessions could help people squeeze an entire week's workout into less than an hour. Those regimens — also called interval training — were originally developed for Olympic athletes and thought to be too strenuous for normal people. More

Exercise can quiet anxiety that comes with illness
BusinessWeek

People suffering from anxiety can find some relief through regular exercise, University of Georgia researchers report. Anxiety
frequently accompanies chronic illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease, and the constant strain can interfere with treatment for those conditions, the researchers say. "While we might expect symptoms of anxiety to be elevated among individuals coping with a chronic medical condition, symptoms may be unrecognized or untreated," said Matthew Herring, a doctoral student in the department of kinesiology and the study's lead author.

Long-distance runners may have endurance in their genes
Medline Plus

Variations in one gene are
associated with athletic endurance and may make a difference in a runner's performance, a new study has found. Researchers examined 155 track and field athletes and found that 80 percent of those who excelled in endurance events, such as marathons, had variations of the NRF2 gene, compared with 46 percent of sprinters. An analysis of 240 non-elite athletes produced similar findings.

Childhood obesity linked to heart risk
The Wall Street Journal
Share

Obese children as young as age 3 show signs of an inflammatory response that has been linked to heart disease later in life, researchers said, in a finding that is likely to further stoke concerns about childhood obesity. The results suggest that
obesity-related disease processes may start earlier than previously believed. Nearly 30 percent of obese 3-to-5-year-olds had elevated blood levels of C-reactive protein - a widely studied marker for inflammation - compared with 17 percent of healthy-weight kids of the same age.

No easy answer on cardio testing for athletes
The Atlanta Journal Constitution via Athletic Business
Share

Gaines Adams did not have an electrocardiogram or echocardiogram as part of his medical
pre-screening as an athlete at Clemson, where he was a star defensive lineman from 2003-06. He died Jan. 17 of sudden cardiac arrest after completing his second season in the NFL. Adams' death once again stirred the debate on whether athletes at all levels are getting the type of medical screening that would prevent sudden deaths from heart-related problems. And once again, school administrators and doctors do not agree on merits of the tests or procedures.
