Furniture Factory Fire Kept in Check by Sprinklers

Employees of a Kentwood, Mich., furniture manufacturer will return to work, after a fire at the factory. Firefighters say the filtration system above a welding unit caught fire. The factory's sprinkler system helped keep the fire in check until crews arrived and put it out. No one was hurt. More

The Eau Claire, Wis., Fire Department says it responded to an early morning fire at a business in Eau Claire. The department says they responded to a call for a fire in a paper machine. The fire department says the fire spread from the machine to duct work above the machine--going to the floor above but the fire was kept under control by the building's sprinkler system. More

A handful of states are passing laws that prevent municipalities from requiring fire sprinklers in new homes, months after such mandates were adopted into a widely used residential building code. Texas, North Dakota and Idaho have passed laws prohibiting local jurisdictions from requiring sprinklers in single- and two-family dwellings. Lawmakers who support such bills say that homeowners should be able to choose whether they want sprinklers, which add to the cost of a home. More
