  Fire sprinklers set to become a standard feature in all new homes

Members of the International Code Council's Residential Building Code Committee (RBCC) have made it clear that fire sprinklers are destined to become a standard feature in all new homes. The fire sprinkler requirement was added to the International Residential Code (IRC) last year, and it is scheduled to become effective January 1, 2011, in states that adopt the latest version of this code. Currently, 48 states use the IRC as a basis of regulating residential construction, although some states lag behind in adopting updates. MORE

A single sprinkler head in the kitchen quickly extinguished a fire at an apartment complex in Lexington County, S.C. The fire was out by the time the Lexington County Fire Service responded. Fire service officials said the sprinkler prevented the damage from being more significant. No one was injured. More

An apartment fire which displaced 33 people could have been contained by fire sprinklers, fire department officials said. But only a handful of local apartments have sprinklers. Out of 124 apartment complexes, condos, and townhouses in Chapel Hill, N.C., only 34 have sprinklers installed, said Chapel Hill Deputy Chief Fire Marshal Matt Lawrence. More

Brampton, Ontario, fire officials are crediting a residential fire sprinkler system with limiting damage and perhaps saving lives during a weekend house fire. According to Brampton Fire and Emergency Services, the sprinkler system extinguished flames by the time fire crews arrived on scene. More

A fuel-testing machine caught fire at Cummins MerCruiser Diesel Test Center in Charleston, S.C., resulting in the evacuation of 150-200 workers from the building at Leeds Park International, officials said. When firefighters arrived, the sprinkler had been activated and there was smoke coming from the building. The sprinklers held the fire in check until firefighters arrived and extinguished it completely, he said. More

Foxboro, Mass., firefighters credited a sprinkler system with preventing a serious fire from developing in an apartment complex. When firefighters arrived, they found light smoke coming out of an apartment on the second floor of the building and the sprinkler system activated. Inside the apartment, they found the sprinklers had extinguished a small fire which originated in a hallway. A pet dog was unharmed, Fire Capt. David Healey said. More

The Berkshire Mall in Wyomissing, Pa., evacuated night after a fire broke out in the display window at the Victoria's Secret store, fire officials said. The sprinkler system in the store and the nearby hallway activated, dousing flames until firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported. More
