Orders for durable goods probably rose in January by the most in four months and home sales showed more signs of stabilizing, indicating manufacturing is driving the U.S. recovery, economists said before reports this week. Orders in January for heavy-duty commercial vehicles fell 18 percent from January 2009 levels, according to data released by a leading research firm. Figures from Columbus, Ind.-based ACT Research showed that 6,513 so-called net orders—new orders minus cancellations—were placed for heavy-duty trucks in January. The firm said January net orders were expected to be weak after companies rushed to fill orders in December ahead of new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) truck emissions standards. Airgas Inc.'s board has recommended its shareholders reject Air Products & Chemicals Inc.'s $5.1 billion takeover effort, again contending its larger rival "is trying to obtain the future value of Airgas at a bargain-basement price."
