There's no secret that the lack of credit for businesses is hurting our economy and the unemployment situation. Many companies will just have to wait until the banks begin lending again; however some companies may have an opportunity for a cash windfall to temporarily get them past the credit freeze. More



Boeing to lay off more than 1000

Boeing Co. said that it sent layoff notices to more than 1,000 people, most of them technology workers in Washington state and California. The notices mean the workers are at risk of being laid off April 23. Spokesman Tim Healy said it's possible the final number of layoffs could shrink. More

Durables orders, home sales probably rose

Orders for durable goods probably rose in January by the most in four months and home sales showed more signs of stabilizing, indicating manufacturing is driving the U.S. recovery, economists said before reports this week. Bookings for goods meant to last several years rose 1.5 percent last month after a 1 percent gain, according to the median estimate of 48 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. More

GM seeks to settle dealer closing disputes

With 1,160 dealers protesting General Motors' attempt to shut them down, the automaker hopes to settle as many of the disputes as possible outside of arbitration, a top executive said. "I would like to settle out of arbitration as many as we can," Mark Reuss, GM North America president, told journalists gathered at the National Automobile Dealers Association convention. More

Report: Heavy-duty truck orders down in January

Orders in January for heavy-duty commercial vehicles fell 18 percent from January 2009 levels, according to data released by a leading research firm. Figures from Columbus, Ind.-based ACT Research showed that 6,513 so-called net orders—new orders minus cancellations—were placed for heavy-duty trucks in January. The firm said January net orders were expected to be weak after companies rushed to fill orders in December ahead of new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) truck emissions standards. More

Schlumberger to Acquire Smith for About $11 Billion

Schlumberger Ltd., the world's largest oilfield-services company, will buy Smith International Inc. for about $11 billion in an all-stock transaction, gaining sole ownership of the biggest drilling-fluids provider. The deal is expected to strengthen Schlumberger as breakthroughs in drilling technology increasingly help spur oil and natural gas production around the world. More

Toyoda to testify before U.S. lawmakers

Toyota president Akio Toyoda has accepted a formal invitation to testify at a hearing. The House Oversight Committee sent the invitation Thursday morning. Toyoda had initially said he would not appear before the committee but would instead send North America chief Yoshimi Inaba. More

Airgas urges rejection of Air Products' takeover bid

Airgas Inc.'s board has recommended its shareholders reject Air Products & Chemicals Inc.'s $5.1 billion takeover effort, again contending its larger rival "is trying to obtain the future value of Airgas at a bargain-basement price." Two weeks ago Airgas's board had rejected the $60 a share bid. Days later, Air Products said it would take the offer directly to shareholders. More
