U.S. economy: Leading index rises more than forecast

The index of U.S. leading indicators rose more than anticipated in December, a sign the economy will keep growing through the first half of the year. Fewer firings, rising stock prices and Federal Reserve efforts to keep interest rates low propelled the leading index, while growth in exports and inventories have spurred production. Sustained demand and faster economic growth will hinge on employment gains that have yet to materialize. More

As the North American International Auto Show came to a close Sunday, organizers said attendance at this year's event exceeded that of the 2009 show. Just more than 95,000 people attended Sunday, bringing the total to nearly 715,000 visitors since doors opened to the public on Jan. 16 - well more than last year's total of 650,000. More


Boeing gets initial India request for 6 refueling planes

Boeing Co. has received initial requests for information from India's federal government for supplying six refueling tankers, in what is likely to further expand the U.S. aircraft maker's presence in this burgeoning market for defense equipment. "We will do a detailed evaluation of the request for interest from the Indian government, study our inventory, and accordingly inform the government," Vivek Lall, vice president and country head of defense and space and security at Boeing India, told reporters. More

Reports suggest upswing in Chicago steel

Chicago-area mills are beginning to call back some employees as the U.S. steel industry begins to steadily rebound from what has been called its worst year since the end of World War II. "2010 will be better," predicted Tom Hargrove, president of United Steelworkers Local 1010 in East Chicago, although he said it is too early to make a call on just how much better. More


About 600 car dealers try to get businesses back

He's among about 600 car dealers nationwide who have signed up to appeal decisions by General Motors Co. or Chrysler Group LLC to revoke their franchise agreements and shut them down. More


GM forecasts 2 million car sales in China this year

GM believes that it will sell 2 million vehicles in the Chinese car market this year. The head of the car company's Chinese unit told Bloomberg that the figure is well ahead of its previous forecasts. Last year, the No.1 U.S. carmaker sold 1.83 million units in China, up 67 percent from 2008. Volkswagen and GM are the two largest foreign car companies in that country. With its plans to introduce more than 10 new models in China, GM may be able to pull decisively ahead of VW in 2010. More


Chinese demand for wind turbines will increase 5 percent annually

According to a new report from The Freedonia Group Inc., a Cleveland based industry research firm, in 2013 the annual market for wind turbine systems in China is forecast to be 62.3 billion yen. This annual increase of 5.3 percent will be driven by a variety of factors, primary among them government policies that encourage the use of renewable and nonpolluting electric power sources such as wind. Such policies include favorable pricing of wind power generated from wind farms, tax incentives and subsidies. More
