Last
week's economic news was a field of green, with eight of the 10 major economic reports improving. Much of the good news surrounded consumers, the labor market and manufacturing. The most notable improvement was the 162,000 increase in payroll employment in March. While the employment gains in most sectors were not overwhelmingly strong, the fact that 10 of the 12 major private sectors increased payrolls in March is a positive sign that the labor market is starting to improve on a broad
basis.

It will in hindsight be seen as the end of the 40-year-old benchmark system of annual contracts but in reality it is just one step along a road started two or more years ago as cracks in the previous system became increasingly obvious. More Steel industry concerned about emissions regulations Industry Week Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Delaying greenhouse-gas emissions rules for stationary sources to January 2011 will provide little benefit for manufacturers, and the tougher rules could halt construction on new manufacturing plants, according to American Iron and Steel Institute President and CEO Thomas Gibson. More U.S. car and truck sales show recovery in March The Detroit Free Press Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
March's strong U.S. auto industry sales increase of 24.3 percent compared with last year points to a U.S. economy that is on the mend. Although the final car and truck sales results fell a tad short of lofty expectations for the month and were driven partially by high incentives, they were still one more positive economic sign. More Virginia creates agency to help develop offshore wind energy Recharge News Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has signed into law green energy legislation that includes creation of a new authority to promote and support offshore wind energy development, and a tax credit for job development. McDonnell says that Virginia must be aggressive in developing wind, solar, biomass and nuclear, along with fossil fuels, because it imports more electricity than any state except California. More Hiring gets big boost in March The Associated Press via Industry.net Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
The nation's economy posted its largest job gain in three years in March, while the unemployment rate remained at 9.7 percent for the third straight month. The increase in payrolls is the latest sign that the economic recovery is gaining momentum and healing in the job market is beginning. Still, the healing is likely to be slow, and most economists don't expect new hiring to be fast enough this year to rapidly reduce the unemployment rate. More
