The Baltimore Sun    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From July 26, 2011: Drew Greenblatt writes, "Despite formidable Asian competition, we have to remember what is good in the USA. Our manufacturers pay $73,000/year on average, plus rich benefits — we need even more of these jobs. Intellectual property is our secret sauce; we can out-innovate anyone, anywhere. And we still have the best political system: We settle disputes peacefully and rationally. Here is what I propose that our politicians in Washington do to leverage those advantages and help our manufacturers and other businesses grow." More

Manufacturing at the crossroads
Carlos M. Cardoso via IndustryWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From Aug. 23, 2011: Manufacturing in America is at a crossroads. Our business climate — including taxes, regulation costs and tariffs — puts U.S. manufacturers at an almost 18 percent competitive disadvantage relative to our major trading partners. Energy and raw materials cost are rising. Fewer young people are attracted to manufacturing as careers, and many Americans believe, erroneously, that U.S. manufacturing is disappearing. However, the truth is quite the opposite. More

Big machinery with global focus rebounds briskly
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

Coincidentally, in the same month as one of the world's worst nuclear crises devastated Fukushima, an incredibly innovative wind turbine system revealed itself on Kyushu University's campus for field testing. With a promise to generate two to three times the power of traditional models, the new turbine designs exemplify the potential for a cleaner energy future in Japan and around the world, removed from the dangers of nuclear power plants. AZo CleanTech    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
From March 1, 2011: The rotors deployed at the turbines rotate 12 to 16 rotations per minute and the generator that is connected to the rotor through a gearbox works at a variable speed matching the received wind speed. To overcome the problem of varying power, the alternating current from the generators are transformed into direct current utilizing giant rectifiers. Such transformed direct current is again changed back to alternating current to match the frequency of the grid. The dual conversion results in nearly 5% of energy loss. More
