840 Pound Emerald Lands in Court
from The New York Times
Just before Christmas, detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department pried open a crate outside a warehouse to find something they had been chasing for months: an 840-pound Brazilian emerald that had been reported stolen. Now, if they could just figure out who owns it. So far, at least five people have come forward to say it's theirs. "It seems like the more we talk to people, the more people claim to have ownership over this thing," said Lt. Thomas Grubb, who heads the sheriff's investigative team on the case. "We haven't determined who's not a suspect, really." More

Never Too Old For Glamour
from The Daily Mail
Should you wear shoulder grazers when you are the far side of 30? Absolutely: statement jewelry looks best (not to mention real - you might actually be able to afford it) worn with a measure of confident maturity. At the Oscars, the success of Angelina Jolie’s red-carpet look hung on the size of the huge emeralds dangling from her ears. More

Milan Fashion Week: Marni Sparkles
from The Los Angeles Times All The Rage Blog
In a season when flourescent color is passing for luxury, Consuelo Castiglioni's Marni collection was a sparkling, metallic delight. There was also real jewelry, lots of it -- extraordinary bib necklaces with gold-dipped flowers and flakes of emerald and amethyst. They'll cost a pretty penny, but the J. Crew versions should be pretty nice too. More

Crown Jewels Repo Demand
from Luxist
Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of the Indian independence leader, has asked Britain to return the Koh-i-noor diamond to India. The Koh-i-Noor is a 105-carat diamond which was presented to Queen Victoria in 1850 (and later received a paring down from 186 carats to its current weight in order to make it appear more brilliant). The stone is mounted in a crown which was worn by the Queen Mother and was on top of her coffin when she died in 2002 and is now in the Tower of London. More

Jeweler Leaves Macy’s Stores
from The St. Louis Business Journal
Finlay Enterprises, an international jeweler, said it will close all of its department store operations, including those at Macy’s Inc., due to liquidity problems. The India-based chain said it will focus on its specialty jewelry stores, which include Bailey Banks & Biddle. That said, it has pegged 40 of its specialty stores for closure as well, according to a recent company release. Finlay in December warned investors that it might have to reduce operations because the U.S. recession had compromised its cash position. Compounding its problems was a notice by Macy’s that it would not renew license agreements at 93 stores that expired Jan. 31. Finlay generated 52 percent of its department store sales from Cincinnati-based Macy’s. More
