Red Carpet is All Ears for Color
By Deborah Yonick, style writer
Celebrities flaunting their red carpet style at the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards Aug. 29th marched to the beat of their own drum in dresses from short and flirty to long and stately. Blue hues prevailed with navy a favorite, although purples, nudes and metal tones rocked. Necklines varied, with single shoulder styles still popular, and texture key incorporating flowers, feathers, lace, and sequins. All ears, Hollywood divas accessorized in gem chandelier, pendant and drop earrings, although bold gemmy rings and stacked gem-set bracelets were staples.
Necks were bare negating daring trendsetters like the leggy model mogul Heidi Klum in a rose budding black strapless micro-mini by Marchesa topped with a $3 million ruby and diamond necklace by Hollywood's designer darling Lorraine Schwartz, with 22-carat ruby ring. While the piece de résistance for the young "Glee" star Lea Michele in navy strapless ruffled flamenco Oscar de la Renta was a 300-carat multi-color diamond platinum mesh necklace, also by L.S., with champagne diamond platinum bracelets and studs.
AGTA made color a focus with its American Gem Trade Association Collection™, which was made available to celebrities at the StyleLab Jewelry Suite. Celebrities and behind-the-scenes personalities tried on an incredible variety of colored gemstone and pearl jewelry by designers from across the country. AGTA placed jewelry on Amanda Righetti of "The Mentalist" with South Sea pearl and diamond earrings by Paspaley, "Make it or Break it" star Candace Cameron Bure in morganite, rubellite and diamond earrings by Yael Designs, E! News Reporter and "Chelsea Lately" panelist Heather McDonald in South Sea cultured pearl and diamond earrings by Paspaley; "Transformers 2" star Kristen Quintrall in pink tourmaline and diamond earrings by Adeler Jewelers, and Renate Radford, senior vice president of NBC, in moonstone, green quartz and sapphire earrings by Eugina Designs.
Sans a statement necklace, bold gem earrings glinting with every turn of the head nabbed attention for many TV A-listers. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, "The New Adventures of Old Christine," popped bright green against her black Narciso Rodriguez gown with large emerald-cut chrysoprase and diamond earrings and bracelet by Irene Neuwirth. The anything but "Desperate Housewife" Eva Longoria adorned her ribbon and rose blooming black strapless gown by Robert Rodriguez with dramatic ruby chandelier earrings ala Loren Jewels, Miami.
Certainly not the last of the ear benders, other embellished lobes belonged to actress/model Eva La Rue in 52-carat aquamarine earrings and "Breaking Bad's" Anna Gunn in 24-carat sapphire earrings and 15-carat sapphire ring — by Chopard; "True Blood's" Carrie Preston in moonstone, green beryl and diamond earrings and actress Sara Rue in tanzanite and purple sapphire flower earrings & mdash; by Hollywood fave Erica Courtney; film producer Nancy Juvonen in citrine earrings (and bracelets) by Neil Lane; Mariana Klaveno of "True Blood" in topaz, red topaz and diamond earrings and ring by Brumani, Sao Paulo, Brazil.
What's fun for fashionistas on the red carpet, or any carpet they may be standing on, is being playful with their jewelry. Perfectly placed, "Glee" star Naya Rivera drew all eyes to the top of her thigh high side slit with a multi-color sapphire flower brooch by Le Vian of Great Neck, New York. While a turquoise and diamond encrusted bracelet in 18k black gold by the L.A.-based brand Bavna looked great with a near-match beaded clutch against "Entertainment Tonight's" Lara Spencer's muted pink gown.
"The Big Three" in precious color are red carpet favorites, but at this year's Emmy ruby made an impressive showing. Next to Klum's stunning bib and Longoria's awesome chandeliers, ruby adorned Mariska Hargitay of "Law and Order Special Victims Unit" in pendant ball earrings, cuff bracelet, and cabochon bombe ring—ala Fred Leighton. Also, within the color range of red, Emmy winner Kyra Sedgwick of "The Closer" flashed a honking 60-carat rubellite platinum ring (and multi gem platinum bracelets) by Ofira.
Rocking the black and white trend, "Parenthood's" Lauren Graham chose a black agate and white diamond platinum ring by Ofira against her Yigal Azrouel two-tone gown, and "30 Rock's" Tina Fey in black lace over white bodice Oscar de la Renta wore black jade, ruby and diamond earrings, and black diamond tassel platinum bracelet by Lorraine Schwartz. Offering Goth glam, reality star Kelly Osbourne, daughter of Ozzy, accessorized her elegant dark textured Tony Ward gown in black and white diamond platinum earrings and bracelets by Martin Katz.
The trend continues for color diamonds, favored over all-white looks, with black, brown, champagne, and yellow diamonds Hollywood's preference. At this year's Emmys, "Mad Men's" January Jones wore a yellow diamond platinum ring by Cartier; "Glee's" Jessalyn Gilsig had a brown diamond platinum ring by Chopard; and "30 Rock's" Jane Krakowski dangled iridescent gray diamond earrings and baroque pearl, iridescent gray and white diamond ring by Lorraine Schwartz.
Also noteworthy, was "Celebrity Fit Club" star Shar Jackson in five strand bead necklace with rubellites and yellow beryl, "High School Musical's" Kaycee Stroh in black spinel and rock crystal earrings, both by Syna, New York, and Molly Goodman, daughter of John Goodman in turquoise, Mexican fire opal and diamond earrings by Ashleigh Branstetter.
Red Carpet Cues:
- The ears have it in big, colorful chandelier, pendant and drop styles.
- Bold gemmy rings rock with either one large gem center or a mix of gem colors, cuts and sizes — and the more rings the merrier!
- Wide gem-encrusted cuffs and gem-line bangles stacked have become a red carpet staple.
- When adorning the neck for red carpet events think statement making, with bib styles mixing different gems trending.
- Color diamonds rule over all white diamond designs. In fact, color in general is the order of the day, with individuality the leading trend. Whether you adorn in ruby or rubellite, citrine or rock crystal wear what makes you feel good!
