Trinity Simons has been named director of the Mayors' Institute on City Design, a National Endowment for the Arts leadership initiative in partnership with the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the American Architectural Foundation. Since 1986, the Mayors' Institute has helped transform communities through design by preparing more than 900 mayors to be the chief urban designers of their cities.

An all-star team of architects has designed Wave Pier, a swirling new culture center for St. Petersburg, Fla., that spirals from the shore like a roller coaster. The designers behind the imaginative structure, Mesh Architects, are a collaborative team made up of Bjarke Ingles Group, Martha Schwarz Partners, Thornton Thomasetti, Parsons Brinchkerhoff HR&A and CC&A. The incredible design sweeps into Tampa Bay from the water's edge, and curves dramatically to create a beautiful and unique cultural center.

Abu Dhabi's 25-story-tall Al Bahar Towers stand at the eastern gateway to the city, where the serve as the headquarters for the Abu Dhabi Investment Council. The mercury can hit 120 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer in the UAE's largest city and capital, but Aedas Architects, working with Arup Engineers, created an incredible mashrabiya facade that pays homage to traditional Arabian architecture and design. The geometric patterns that comprise this gigantic screen include over 1,000 moving elements that contract and expand during the day depending on the sun's position — similar to Jean Nouvel's Institut du Monde Arabe.
