Medscape (free registration required)    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Robotic-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy was associated with shorter hospital stays, less blood loss and a quicker return to daily activities compared with abdominal myomectomy in patients with uterine fibroids, according to a retrospective review. "The take-home message of this study is that gynecologists who perform myomectomy should consider robotic surgery," said Magdi Hanafi, M.D., from Gynecology and Fertility Specialists in Atlanta. And for each tenfold increase in the level of a related compound, DDE, there was a 107 gram decrease in birth weight. More

Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Avastin, the multibillion-dollar cancer drug sold by Roche, helps slow the progression of ovarian cancer, according to new studies. But the question of whether it lengthens the lives of women with the disease remains unanswered, although researchers reported a trend toward improved survival in newly-diagnosed patients. The issue of Avastin's usefulness has become controversial in the wake of trials showing that it does not extend overall survival for women with metastatic breast cancer. More

Preparing for ICD-10: Performing a baseline MR documentation assessment
Physician News Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
No longer just a rumor, the switch-over from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM is now a sure deal and the established start date remains Oct. 1, 2013. Providers must be an active part of the conversion process, as many of the issues to be tackled are provider-driven. Take, for example, medical record documentation. MR documentation represents the beginning, middle and end of the current ICD-9-CM life cycle; it is foundational to the entire process of diagnosis coding and nothing materialized to date promises to change with ICD-10. Leasing practice to hospital can be a viable business plan
American Medical News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
Hospitals and physicians increasingly are looking at ways to work together. For some doctors, that may mean leasing a practice to a hospital. A lease agreement usually involves a hospital or large health system paying a monthly rent for a practice's hard assets rather than buying them. Leasing may be more complex than an outright sale, but experts say leasing is an attractive option for doctors who want to test the waters before selling a practice. More

To curb malpractice costs, judges jump in early
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Judge-directed negotiation in malpractice cases is seen by the Obama administration as offering states a way to curb liability expenses that have sharply increased health care costs nationally. Getting judges involved earlier, more often and much more actively in pushing for settlements, is its crucial ingredient. New York officials say the program bypasses years of court battles, limiting legal costs while providing injured patients with compensation that is likely to be less than a jury would award but can be paid out years earlier, without lengthy appeals.
