Edison, NJ, council president wants 24-hour businesses to install cameras

After a spree of gas station robberies, Edison, N.J., Council President Charles Tomaro is urging every Middlesex County town to require 24-hour businesses to install video surveillance systems. Edison's ordinance requires new and existing gas stations and convenience stores that operate 24-hours to install and maintain surveillance camera systems with videotape backups. The measure authorizes police to issue fines from $250 to $1,000 to businesses that do not comply or fail to maintain an operable surveillance system. Violations could also result in revocation of the town-issued business license. More

A California businessman who has 13 locksmith companies registered in his name in Colorado believes he is being victimized by someone who is using his name without his permission. Omar Hammud, 30, of Irvine, Calif., said he recently became aware that someone is registering locksmith companies with phony addresses in his name in Colorado and several other states. More

Tax credit to pay third of small business health cost

As many as four million small businesses in the U.S. may qualify for tax credits to recover more than a third of the cost of providing medical care for employees, under a program created by the health overhaul law. Businesses with less than 25 full-time employees each will be eligible, according to a U.S. Treasury Department fact sheet made public today. Enterprises that qualify will get 35 percent of the cost of employee health-care premiums reimbursed by the government, beginning this year, and 50 percent starting in 2014, the fact sheet said.
