Excerpt: How Much Exercise for Equine Weight Loss?
from The Horse
Exercise is particularly important for a horse's weight management. Often, owners want to see an increase in muscle development in addition to an overall decrease in fat coverage. There are many myths about feeding extra protein or various supplements to "build muscle," but if it were that easy, every person would have a lean stomach with "abs of steel." To build muscle, a horse (or person) must exercise and stress the muscles such that they adapt and get bigger to accommodate the stress. More

National Service Provides Temporary Help for Vacationing Horse Owners
from The Star-Ledger
Even small stables that have hired help can run into problems when the employee goes on vacation. Friends and neighbors with a knowledge of horses who also are willing to feed, water and muck stalls several times a day are hard to find, especially if they also have to take blankets on and off and turn the horses out to pasture. Libby Nesvold, a Morristown, N.J., small animal veterinarian, got tired of using high school kids to tend the horses at her Mendham home when she couldn't be there. Then Leslie Brooks of Long Valley, N.J., a horse owner and longtime riding companion of Nesvold's, got involved with a national company called Fetch! Pet Care and started a franchise that offers service for horse owners who need temporary help when they leave home. More

Vet Halts Horses' Suffering when Owners Can't
from The Oregonian
Sound Equine Options, a new nonprofit group established by horse veterinarian Scott Hansen, is a relief fund for horse owners in need. The group offered its first free euthanasia clinic recently and has other programs in the works. Stories of abandoned and neglected horses -- scabby skin stretched over ribs, sunken eyes staring at the camera -- abound in these dire financial times. But this euthanasia clinic is not meant to be a way out for horse owners who can't afford hay. It's for severely ill and suffering animals. More

Consider Drainage when Selecting a Horse Barn Site
from The Horse
Want to see an example of less-than-stellar drainage? Check out your own horse barn. One of the most important concerns for a building site is water drainage, which includes water flowing to the building site as well as water moving away from the barn. "Many horse owners do not adequately select and prepare a barn building site to handle water runoff because of the added costs of site preparation," said Dave Freeman, PhD, PAS, Dipl. ACAN, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension equine specialist. "Unfortunately for horse owners and their animals, the barn will not be fully functional without preparing for excess drainage." More
