The first-ever, all-industry show for the coin-op and out-of-home entertainment industries is just around the corner! The inaugural AAMA/AMOA Amusement Expo is set for March 10-12, at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas. The event, which combines the AMOA Expo, formerly held in the fall, with ASI, formerly conducted in springtime, will bring together the best of both shows and introduce new benefits for you. The Amusement Expo is jointly owned and sponsored by AMOA and the American Amusement Machine Association (AAMA). As a result of the show merger, the number of national events for the marketplace is reduced by one, saving many of you considerable time and resources. However, the most important consequences for you as a showgoer this year will be enhanced value. There will be more learning opportunities for you to tap into... more one-on-one opportunities between you and your industry friends and more profit-generating opportunities for you to pursue as an operator or distributor. AAMA to honor Rich Oltmann at Expo Amusement and Music Operators Association Share
The American Amusement Machine Association (AAMA) will present its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award to Richard Oltmann of Family Fun Companies.
Rich started in the business more than 48 years ago as a technician and game mover. Today, he is owner of three successful family entertainment centers in the Chicago metro area and the game design/development firm, Family Fun Companies. Rich will receive his honor during the Opening Ceremonies of the upcoming AAMA/AMOA Amusement Expo. The awards ceremony and ribbon-cutting will take place starting at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10, at the entrance to North Hall 3 of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

There's still a
positive buzz circulating among those who were in San Antonio last weekend for the 2010 version of the annual AMOA Council of Affiliated States Meeting. Not only did more than 50 delegates from 24 states fill the room and rock the house with tales from their territories, it set an upbeat tone leading into the upcoming AAMA/AMOA Amusement Expo in Las Vegas.
The gathering served as a perfectly-timed pep-talk for coin-op leaders from around the country, who joined State Association Committee Chairman Rick LaFleur in rallying the troops around the "Road Map for Success" theme. In addition to panels featuring manufacturer/supplier perspectives; legalized gaming veterans; and taxes and licensing, the program also featured presentations on effective lobbying; starting a new state association; national issues; and AMOA's new online buyers' guide. Of course, the state reports — the series of presentations on industry conditions and challenges in areas across the United States — lived up to their billing as the "main course" during the 1.5 day session at the Hyatt Regency on the Riverwalk Hotel. Other highlights of the Feb. 19-20, gathering included a Welcoming Reception, pre-meeting golf outing, Executive Director session and group dinner that included 84 attendees and guests. When showgoers pick up their badges to the March 10-12, AAMA/AMOA Amusement Expo in Las Vegas, they will be issued a yellow ribbon to wear during this year's show.
The ribbons are a sign of support for the U.S. servicemen and women deployed in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. The show also invites anyone attending the show who has a connection — as a family member or friend of someone currently serving in the U.S. military — to submit details and a picture of that individual using the downloadable form on the show's official Web site: www.amusementexpo.org. Four operating firms have merged to form Entertainment Experts, LLC. In a press release distributed on Feb. 25, the new group, consisting of AJ Video, Baltimore, Md.; JES-Video and Amusement Vending and Travel Center Specialists, Denver, Colo.; and BJ Novelty, Covington Ky., will become operational starting on Monday, March 1, 2010. Billed as one of the nation's largest suppliers of entertainment equipment, the merger is designed to leverage purchasing power and streamline distribution of goods and services in the marketplace. The four companies are also part of the Club Lucky Group organization, as well as AMOA.
New DOJ taskforce will combat IP crimes Vending Times Share
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said the Department of Justice has formed a new taskforce to combat the growing number of domestic and international intellectual property crimes. Deputy AG David Ogden will chair the new unit, called the Task Force on Intellectual Property. He will coordinate closely with state and local law enforcement as well as several DOJ divisions, including criminal, civil, antitrust, the Office of Legal Policy, U.S. Attorneys and the FBI, among others. Royce A. Green, Jr., owner of Green Coin Machines Distributing Co. celebrated his 75th birthday, as well as over 51 years in the coin machine industry, Saturday, Jan. 30. A drop-in party was hosted by his friend Georgie Martin and the Green Family in his honor. The party was enjoyed out in the country at the "Three Bells Farm," in Aynor, S. C. Only one manufacturer of coin-operated pinball machines, Stern Pinball Inc., remains in operation globally, yet fans of this amusement see a future as bright and shiny as the balls the game is played with for this classic past time. Denver Sexton, a manager at Hound Dog's Pizza, said the Play Boy pinball machine at his 24-hour business is rarely unoccupied. As arcades closed in the late '80s and '90s because of the rise in popularity of home gaming systems, pinball struggled to survive, but thanks to its unique nature and hard core fans it seems the amusement is here to stay and might be making something of a comeback. The Cumberland Township Board of Supervisors in Pennsylvania adopted an ordinance that places a tax upon coin-operated amusement devices. A tax rate is set as a percentage of the price to activate the machine, such as jukeboxes, pinball and video games, and pool tables. More |
