ANLA to Host SBA Tree Bill Fly-In
from ANLA
On July 21, 2010, ANLA will be hosting a one day fly-in for industry members wishing to advocate for passage of H.R. 4509 and S. 3279. These bills would reauthorize the SBA's National Small Business Tree Planting Program. Despite bi-partisan support for H.R. 4509 and S. 3279, the opportunity for passage this year is diminishing in the face of a crowded Congressional calendar and looming midterm elections. If you are interested, join us in Washington, DC for a day of education and advocacy on the Small Business Environmental Stewardship Assistance Act. Registration is free and ANLA will schedule meetings on your behalf.

For more information, please contact Corey Connors at cconnors@anla.org, or by phone at (202) 789-2900.

Retailers Devise Novel Ways to Revive Sales
from The New York Times
Tired of waiting for spending to rebound on its own, retailers are taking matters into their own hands. Stores like Sam's Club, Target, Toys "R" Us, Staples and Office Depot are offering unconventional promotions meant not only to attract visitors to stores, but also to get them feeling profligate. Sam's Club is introducing a program in which it facilitates loans for shoppers of up to $25,000, backed by the Small Business Administration. Target will give its credit card holders 5 percent discounts. Toys "R" Us is instituting a holiday fund program where it adds to shoppers' savings, and Staples and Office Depot are giving away office products for a penny or at no cost.  More

How Sustainable Are Green Mansions?
from Construction Digital
Sarah Susanka, a residential architect and creator of the "Not So Big" philosophy of home building, believes that green homes are, by definition, smaller homes. Fewer resources are needed to construct them and less energy is required to maintain them. Susanka’s less-is-more message is part of a growing rift in the otherwise idyllic world of eco-friendly housing.  More

Good, But Not Great, Rebound
from Logistics Management
Beacon Economics' forecast for the U.S. economy continues to be optimistic — in the short run. But that’s the short run, analysts added, and a solid 2010 does not necessarily mean the same for 2011 or 2012. Indeed, Beacon Economics is growing more pessimistic about the medium run.  More

15 Things Every Business Owner Should Know
from Inc.
Cash crunches happen from time to time, but if they are chronic at your company, then you may have to re-think the way you do business. Though cash-flow squeezes often seem mystifying, there are only a few explanations: Your gross margins may be too low, caused by discounted prices or out-of-control direct costs. Your overhead, including rent and payroll, may be too high. Your payment terms may be too liberal or your billing procedures too slack.  More
