Devastating Tree-Killing Pathogen Traced to California from International Business Times A new study by the University of California at Berkeley and Italian researchers may have solved a decades-long mystery behind the source of a tree-killing fungus that affected trees worldwide. Genetic sleuthing by an international team of researchers has fingered California as the source of the pathogen, Seiridium cardinale, which is the cause of cypress canker disease and has killed as much as 95 percent of native trees in the cypress family, including junipers and some cedars. More Michigan Woman Files $5 Million Suit Over Imprelis from The Detroit News An Allen Park, Mich., woman has filed a $5 million class-action lawsuit against the maker of a weed killer that landscapers have linked to thousands of tree deaths around the country. Donna Cozad sued E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Co. in federal court in Detroit, claiming her trees were permanently damaged after a landscaper applied Imprelis in May. The action follows other lawsuits in Michigan claiming similar damage. More
President Obama: Extend Transportation Bill from Politico The day after the government reported devastating jobs numbers, President Barack Obama pushed Congress once more to extend the transportation bill, warning that allowing it to expire would be a "disaster" for the economy. "Right away, over 4,000 workers would be furloughed without pay," Obama said in his weekly address to the nation. "If it's delayed for just 10 days, we will lose nearly $1 billion in highway funding that we can never get back. And if we wait even longer, almost 1 million workers could be in danger of losing their jobs over the next year."
