Co-operative wants $1 million solar farm in Sudbury

Sun Co-operative, a not-for-profit organization, has made progress over the winter months toward the construction of a $1 million solar farm on Vale-owned property. Bob Jeffery, vice-president of the Sun Co-operative board, said the group has made an application with the Ontario Power Authority's Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) program, which offers small green-power generators a chance to sell power to the provincial grid at a guaranteed rate.More

Brookfield Renewable Energy adds Irish wind farms to holdings

A Toronto company with a significant presence in the Ottawa-area, has announced a major $280 million deal that will add a major portfolio of Irish wind farms to its holdings. Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners LP, has purchased the portfolio of Ireland's Bord Gais Energy, which includes 321 megawatts of operating wind capacity across 17 wind projects in eight counties in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The portfolio has an additional 125 megawatts currently in construction and an approximate 300-MW wind development pipeline.More

Ontario Waterpower Association, Parks Canada announce canal management collaboration

The Ontario Waterpower Association and Parks Canada have announced a collaboration to manage and develop the hydroelectric power potential of Ontario's national historic canal system. Titled Towards a New Business Relationship: Waterpower on Parks Canada Agency Waterways, OWA said the framework is expected to foster new infrastructure investment and support the long-term sustainability of the province's Trent-Severn Waterway and Rideau Canal.More

Materials experts create spintronic thermoelectric power generators

While such an idea may seem far-fetched today, significant progress has already been made to realize these devices. Researchers at the Nanostructured Materials Research Laboratory at the University of Utah have fabricated spintronics-based thin film devices which do just that, i.e. convert even minute waste heat into useful electricity.More

Nova Scotia selects marine power developers for Bay of Fundy project

The Nova Scotia Department of Energy has selected a pair of marine and hydrokinetic technology developers to deploy arrays in the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy test site. The announcement, which came alongside provincial approval of $3.6 million in tidal industry funding which allows OpenHydro and Black Rock Tidal Power to participate in research and development efforts in the Bay of Fundy's Minas Passage. Hydro-Quebec Distribution signs PPA for output of 150-MW wind facility
Hydro-Quebec Distribution has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement for the output of the planned 150-MW Mesgi'g Ugju's'n wind project in Quebec. The project is owned by Innergex Renewable Energy Inc. and Mi'gmaq communities Gesgapegiag, Gespeg and Listuguj, according to a March 24 news release. The contract stipulates a selling price of 10.12 Canadian cents per kWh in 2014 dollars, with an annual adjustment based on 100% of the consumer price index until the end of 2016 and on 20 per cent thereafter. Manitoba Hydro selects consortium to construct 695-MW Keeyask hydropower plant

A team led by engineering firm Bechtel has been awarded a $1.25 billion contract from Manitoba Hydro to construct the 695-MW Keeyask hydroelectric plant. The consortium — BBE Hydro Constructors Limited Partnership — includes Bechtel, Barnard Construction and EllisDon. The group could begin work on the plant by the end of the year, with Keeyask generating power in 2019. Completion is targeted for 2020.More
