ITC seeks permit from Canadian National Energy Board for 1000MW Lake Erie Connector project

ITC Lake Erie Connector, subsidiary of US power transmission firm ITC Holdings, has filed a permit application with National Energy Board (NEB) of Canada for its 1000MW ITC Lake Erie Connector transmission line. The proposed connector will be a +/- 320 kV bi-directional, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) merchant transmission line. It will be the first direct link connecting the markets of the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and PJM Interconnection.More

Ontario Speaker rejects PC complaint that Hydro One misled the legislature

The Speaker of the Ontario legislature has ruled that there was no contempt of parliament in the Hydro One dealings with the provincial ombudsman and the government. The Progressive Conservatives complained after ombudsman Andre Marin accused officials at Hydro One of misleading, and even lying, to him and the Ministry of Energy about the extent of its billing problems.More

Invenergy planning Ontario wind farm

Chicago-based Invenergy is planning an Ontario-based wind farm that will be located on 11,000 acres of private land in South Dundas, Ontario. The Nine Mile wind farm, planned for 50 MW-90 MW, was made possible by virtue of the developer qualifying for Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator's (IESO) request for proposals (RFP) for large-scale renewable procurement earlier this year. Invenergy also plans to submit a proposal for a solar project.More

TransCanada reaches deals with 3 First Nations

TransCanada Corp. says it has reached project agreements with three more First Nations in northern British Columbia as part of efforts to build a pipeline across the province to a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal on the coast. Specifics of the agreements weren't announced but TransCanada said they provide for annual legacy payments over the life of the pipelines commercial operation plus benefits upon signing and at other milestones.More

AltaLink proposes to save Alberta customers more than $550 million over 3 years

Alberta's largest electric transmission company, submitted a proposal to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC), to save Albertans more than $550 million between 2015 and 2017. AltaLink is proposing to change the existing regulated capitalization and tax treatment of its business to significantly reduce costs to Albertans without impacting the reliability of the transmission system. This submission amends AltaLink's previously filed 2015-2016 General Tariff Application (GTA), which outlines AltaLink's proposed costs over the two-year period.More

Hungary, China agree to cooperate in training nuclear staff

Iran to build dozens of small hydro plants in Indonesia through 2020

The Iranian government has finalized a deal to develop 48 small hydropower plants in Indonesia within the next five years. The agreement, signed by Indonesian Economics Affairs Coordinating Minister Sofyan Djalil and Iranian Energy Minister Hamid Chitchian, is reflective of other recent efforts between the countries to strengthen their economic ties. The hydroelectric projects will range in capacities between 1 MW and 10 MW.More

Powering African mines: What role will renewables play in addressing mining's current power crisis?

Anglo American Platinum is stepping up its investigation of renewables now that South Africa's main energy utility, Eskom, is experiencing energy shortfalls. "This is a very big challenge for us," says Gerhard van den Berg, the company's principal engineer, energy. "With Eskom having shortages and not being able to supply, we've run into what they call stage-two load curtailment." To meet this curtailment, the mining giant has shed 65 megawatts of its load by keeping the mines running but closing down some operations, including furnaces and processing plants.More
