Executives from some of the largest U.S. manufacturers are gathering in Washingto to seek more government support for their efforts to refurbish and sell used products ranging from cell phones to railroad locomotives to medical scanners. Remanufacturers including Caterpillar Inc., General Electric Co., General Motors Co., Eastman Kodak Co. and Xerox Corp. would like the government to push harder for free global trade in reconditioned products and to help fund research into better methods of remanufacturing, which involves restoring used products to like-new condition for resale. India has refused to play ball with the U.S. and other developed countries on a controversial proposal for opening up developing markets to remanufactured goods under the Doha trade talks, apprehending this will lead to dumping of sub-standard goods, reports One India. "The subject of trade in remanufactured goods requires extensive groundwork before one can look at the specific contours of any commitments, whether it be soft or hard or on a best endeavored basis," India said in its proposal. Volvo will use the bC India show to launch its Volvo Remanufactured Program onto the Indian market. The scheme encourages a more sustainable approach to spare parts by allowing customers to have old components renovated to the same condition as a new part, cutting down on waste. These come with a warranty from Volvo and are cheaper than buying new spare parts. More

The Heavy Duty Remanufacturing Group of the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association awarded Camerota Truck Parts, Enfield, Conn., its Mike Hill Heavy Duty Remanufacturer of the Year Award. The award is given to a company or individual who has demonstrated innovative ways to create and grow a successful business model and in the process supported industry efforts to advance the science of remanufacturing. According to Bill Gager, President of APRA/HDRG, the panel's decision to award Camerota Truck Parts this year's award was because they are a leading independent remanufacturer in the aftermarket. S&S Cycle, Inc. has hired Scott Seaman as its warranty rebuild and remanufacturing service manager in La Crosse, Wis., Seaman has been riding and working on motorcycles since the age of seven. He worked for Andrews Products, Inc. in Chicago for 12 years moving to Omaha, Neb., to work for GMA Engineering in 2002. As the bloom faded off the V-twin industry rose, GMA closed in the fall of 2007, forcing Seaman to find work outside the powersports industry. More

3 Cummins plants inaugurated

Cummins in India inaugurated three plants at its Phaltan, Pune Megasite. The company invested Rs.500 crore in these plants. The 300 acre project qualifies for 'mega project' of the Maharashtra Government. Half of the acreage is set up as a Domestic Tariff Area and the other half as a Special Economic Zone for exports. The first three plants that were launched were Tata Cummins' second manufacturing facility producing engines for commercial vehicles, power generation and industrial markets, an engine rebuild centre and a reconditioning facility for remanufacturing engines and components.
