Spring Forum Continues to Grow in Cleveland
American Supply Association

Gary Oatey, Executive Chairman of Oatey, interviews
Richard Smucker, Chairman of the Board of Smucker’s.
This week, 170 of ASA’s Young Executives (YE) met in Cleveland, OH for the group’s Annual Spring Forum. The event had record-breaking attendance and YE is one of ASA’s fastest-growing divisions. The first day was led by Alex Goldfayn, focusing on simple sales and customer service techniques to help grow your business, and followed by a one-of-a-kind dinner event at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, sponsored by Oatey. On the second day, Richard Smucker, Chairman of the Board of Smucker’s, participated in a truly amazing interview. Later in the day, attendees participated in the newly-added YE Roundtable event where attendees were able to connect, troubleshoot, and talk best practices on common industry topics. The Young Execs also toured Oatey’s new headquarters and manufacturing facility.

The YE Division is designed to develop the leadership skills and relationships of the industry’s young professionals. The 2018 Spring Forum will take place next May in New Jersey. LEARN MOREMore

Labor Department Moves to Rescind Persuader Rule
American Supply Association
This week, the Department of Labor (DOL) sent to the Office of Management and Budget’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs a new proposed rulemaking rescinding the Obama administration’s persuader rule. Included in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act, the persuader rule altered the advice exemption under the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act. Its intent was to make it easier and faster to conduct union elections, breaking the work force into smaller bargaining units, and eroding the line between employers and contractors. More

Populism Can't Fix the U.S. Jobs-Skills Gap
Imperial Consulting Corporation
Both older and younger American workers are very angry over the current state of the U.S. labor market as they face unemployment or underemployment. Many have been attracted to simplistic populist solutions of the extreme left or right. In fact, there are 20 million workers who are not officially counted as “unemployed.” If they were, there would be 28 million Americans seeking jobs and a more realistic unemployment rate of 17.5 percent. We are witnessing the greatest collapse of the U.S. labor market since the 1930s. The desperation of these workers has helped trigger a rise in populist politics last seen during the era of America’s Great Depression. LEARN MOREMore

OSHA Postpones Injury and Illness Reporting Requirements
American Supply Association
Late last week, OSHA announced it would be postponing, for the foreseeable future, the looming requirements to track employee illness and injuries, a longtime priority of ASA and its members. Like a number of rules promulgated by the Obama Administration that are currently tied up in the courts, the Trump Administration now picks up the mantle of defending them. In choosing not to, the administration is effectively pulling the plug on moving forward with this rule, although outside groups can and in this case are challenging the administration in an attempt to force them to enforce the rule. Benefits of Employee Training and Development
The Happy Manager
The best place to start is by being clear about what results you want to achieve. Then finish with an assessment of the results that are actually being achieved. It’s also important to remember that the real benefits of employee training should be seen as a progression. That is, where performance improvements in individuals progress to performance improvements throughout the entire organization.
