Senate Confirms Key Energy Nominees, Unlocking Billions in Energy Development
American Supply Association
Last week, as the Senate was preparing to get a head start on its August recess, dozens of Trump administration appointees received votes for confirmation. Among the many needed to help the administration govern are members of the lesser-known Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Like most federal commissions, FERC is made up of a bipartisan slate of commissioners, who are charged with approving permit requests for the construction of pipelines and gas exports. ASA joined with others in the energy community to demand Senate action before adjourning in August, stating “this situation has denied employment to over 50,000 construction workers, and the thousands more who manufacture and supply the steel and equipment these projects require…it has stranded hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of capital investment.”More

Renewed Threat to Stop Philippine Exports of Nickel Ore
ASA Materials Market Digest©
As July drew to a close, LME nickel prices were on the rebound above the $10,000 per tonne level last seen in mid-April. The surge follows a renewed threat to the mining industry by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who said he might consider stopping the export of unprocessed raw materials due to environmental concerns. The Philippines is the world’s largest exporter of nickel ore. Duterte said he wants to see all processing done within his country before exporting and would draft a new law to regulate the mining industry. Mining interests thought they were in the clear after a hardline environment secretary, who threatened mine closures, was rejected for office in May, but the country’s controversial president has resurrected their fears. Why Are These Billions in Pipeline Projects Stalled?
Politico
Billions of dollars’ worth of shovel-ready infrastructure projects have been held up by a bureaucratic morass that President Donald Trump helped to create. Trump’s slowness to fill vacancies at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is one reason for a growing backlog of natural gas pipelines and a gas export terminal awaiting approval from the agency, which has been unable to conduct major business since February. The waiting list has grown to at least $13 billion worth of projects expected to generate more than 23,000 construction jobs, according to a POLITICO analysis — largely in states Trump won in November.
